What To Expect After Treatment

Your endodontic treatment has now been completed. The root canal system has been sealed and you are well on your way to healing. There are a couple of things to keep in mind over the course of the next few days.

  • Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue will be tender, similar to a bruise, for several days after treatment. We recommend that you do not chew on this tooth until the tenderness is gone.
  • Postoperative symptoms are generally proportional to preoperative symptoms and usually peak about 2-3 days after treatment. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm. Every patient and every tooth is different and there are varying levels of discomfort. Some patients may even have discomfort for longer (i.e. two weeks). Please make sure you continue to brush and floss the area normally.
  • Our general recommendation is to take a combination of Tylenol and ibuprofen as directed on the bottle before the numbness wears off. You might need to take these medications for up to 3 days. These medications are more effective if taken at the same time. If you are unable to take ibuprofen or Tylenol due to a medical condition let our staff know and Dr. Erben will recommend an alternative.
  • Your tooth has either been sealed temporarily or permanently. After treatment, you will receive personalized post-operative instructions, detailing your next steps and when to return to your general dentist.
  • If swelling should develop or you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above-listed regimen, please contact our office at 805-349-2222.
